The Penguin
By Nicolas Billon
Written for the 2021 Climate Change Theater Action (CCTA), The Penguin by Nicolas Billon is an allegorical one-act play. It tells the story of a penguin minding his own business in the Antarctic tundra when, suddenly, his pleasant waddling is interrupted by a rather irritating albatross. It is meant to be flexible in terms of medium (in-person, streamed) as well as casting (race, age, gender). Earnest, honest, and sure to leave a lasting impression on any audience, The Penguin satirizes climate change denial through allegory and humor.

Climate Change Theatre Action
"Our Planet. Our Future. Our Responsibility" – CCTA 2021
Coinciding with the United Nations' biennial climate conferences, Climate Change Theatre Action is a worldwide series of presentations of short plays that are centered around climate justice. Every other year, CCTA commissions 50 playwrights from around the world to write a short play for that years' series. Then, they offer support to anyone who chooses to partake in this event by offering "some guidance on how to produce events, marketing support, and a model that encourages leadership and self-determination". Participants are encouraged to think of an action – social, political, or educational – to do in conjunction with their performance(s) or reading(s) of the play(s) they choose. In 2019, CCTA received a Climate Arts Award from NewArts and a President's Sustainability Leadership Award, both from York University in Toronto, Canada.
